Lighting & Growth Management
Lighting influences feed consumption, growth rates and egg production. A consistent, planned lighting program helps synchronize behaviour and optimise productivity.
Lighting for chicks
Provide almost continuous light for the first few days to help chicks find feeders and drinkers — typically 23 hours of light and 1 hour dark during day one. Gradually reduce light duration as they grow.
Lighting for layers
Mature laying hens require around 14–16 hours of light daily for optimal egg production. Use consistent schedules and avoid abrupt changes which can cause stress and drop in laying.
Practical notes
- Use dimmers when possible to simulate dawn and dusk.
- Avoid intense, direct lighting that causes birds to crowd under fixtures.
- Ensure light bulbs are protected from dust and moisture to avoid flicker and failure.
